Attention to Detail

  • Original busted side seams for a flat smooth feel and original look. Only 1921 busts the side seam to waistband avoiding the bump on the side seam below the front pocket.
  • A zigzag stitch is used to reinforce the side seam. Each style has a unique color or side seam stitch.
  • The hang tag is made of the same fabric as the jean. This allows the customer to patch their jeans if they accidentally tear or wear out.
  • The jeans are washed without bleach or environmentally harmful chemicals. 1921 only uses natural products, stones and water
  • The wear areas on the jeans are hand done without using chemicals. In addition to being environmentally benign the fabric keeps its original tear and tensile strength giving it a longer wearing life.

1921 presents a unique collection of jeans marked by sewing styles original to denim products manufactured prior to the industrial revolution and the advent of mass produced garments.

1921 denim at Brooklyn's best denim store: Razor The 1921 Spring 2006 collection introduces jeans stitched using a variety of antique sewing machines which lends the collection an authentic, earthly feel. The whip-stitching also serves to reinforce 1921's unique busted-side seams which continue from the cuff to the waistband. Also featured in the new collection are sewing patterns created by a diamond stitch machine and a blanket stitch machine. 1921 has incorporated the use of these machines in its production facilities in Canada and none of the sewing machines used in the Spring 2006 collection are still being manufactured today.

In conceptualizing the Spring 2006 collection, denim innovator and 1921 Design Director Allan Kemp envisioned a collection with the look and feel of jeans made at the turn of the century. With access to archives that date back to the year 1921 when Western Glove Works, manufacturer of 1921 jeans and one of the oldest family-owned denim manufacturers in the North America, was founded, Kemp was able to incorporate the stitching styles of these antique sewing machines into his design. The new collection also features actual hand-stitching which takes approximately 30 minutes per pair and is done with needles from the saddle industry.

Pioneers in the trade, the innovators at 1921 have perfected techniques for constructing denim and infuse the collection with everything that a jean should be. The foundation for each pair of 1921s is the best quality Italian or Japanese denim. The brand uses both Candiani, milled in Italy and Kaihara, an authentic ring spun denim produced on original spinning machinery in Japan. Fully handcrafted, each jean is hand-cut, treated and washed to give the denim an authentic vintage look. All abrasion detail is done using special hand tools -- making each 1921 jean is distinctly different from the next. No detail is spared, down to the hammered buttons and rivets in a patina finish and the busted side seams with a selvage edge look. The beauty of denim is not what you see but rather what it can become." - Allan Kemp, denim interpreter, 1921.

Though its Winnipeg factory headquarters features high-tech equipment that allows the company to produce high quality products quickly and efficiently, the company employs an elite team of artisans to hand-produce the 1921 product each season. All sanding, whiskering and grinding is done by only two individuals - carefully selected from the 90 hand-technicians that the company has on staff. Just 12 sewing machine operators, hand-picked for their skill, sew all 1921 jeans.

1921 fit mimics the natural contours of the body; every fold and crease of the jean essentially becomes a part of its wearer. The collection is crafted to be worn again and again and again, transcending trend. A pair of 1921 jeans purchased today is still favorite 10 years from now.
